Report on Spirit of Life
Background The Churches Together in England’s Group for Evangelisation produced a workbook Equipping Your Church in a Spiritual Age in winter 2005 which looked at contemporary spirituality, the theology of the church’s engagement with it and practical suggestions of what local churches might do to engage with the growing interest in spirituality outside church. The writing group was encouraged to demonstrate some of its principles and suggestions, and so it linked up with Coventry Cathedral to run a Christian spirituality fair called Spirit of Life in Coventry Cathedral on Monday 1st May 2006. Aims and Objectives Spirit of Life had two aims:
Spirit of Life had five objectives:
Evaluation Impression forms were handed out randomly to those present who were asked to return them. It seems that the Christians present were more willing to complete them than the non-Christians. Evaluation forms were given to each contributor and almost every contributor returned the form. The evaluation is therefore based on personal impressions and a set of not-very-random responses from ‘customers’, and we have tried to make allowances for this in our reflection. Spirit of Life was a success when judged by its aims of:
Spirit of Life was also a success when judged by its objectives.
Other points A leading designer produced the logo; publicity was professionally done and the Cathedral’s publicity organisation was extremely helpful. Follow up Coventry churches are being encouraged to list their follow-up plans on the www.SpiritOfLive.org.uk website. The Cathedral is considering a second Spirit of Life in 2007.
Hope 08
GfE members have followed the developments of Hope08 with interest and encouragement. Building on the word and deed missions like Soul in the City, some key national church leaders of youth mission agencies have come together and suggested that many churches might embark on local mission activities under the banner of Hope08. Sally Martin came to GfE with her daughter Hannah who had been on a Soul inthe City team and returned to Wakefield to say to her local Anglican church, where her father is Vicar, why cant we do this sort of mission with the people of the Portabello estate?' The church has been involved on the estate for many years, alongsidre the Methodist and Baptist churches which also border it. Following many years of youth and childrends work, and involvement int he residents association, the Concil offered the management of a shop on the estate to Sally to run as Cafe and advice centre. This became the base for the summer week called 'Soul Piortabello' with circus skills and football teams, a 'clean up' campaign and many other events backed by daily prayer. With Council, Community and Police involved, everyone thought it a great success: built on by the ongoing work of the cafe through the Autumn and winter months. Summer events this year will be held two days each week throughout the summer holidays. Sally spoke of the inspirational work at GfE, with Ian Chisdnall present. Ian is the national director of Hope 08, and he agreeed that this was a good model of churches working toether in mission and ongoing community service. GfE share the foundation aspirations of Hope 08, and encourage other churches together groups to follow the example of the south Wakefield churches Visit sandalmagna.com for further information Hope08.com.
