New Housing

The Government called for 3 million new homes, but how should the church respond?

A dedicated website and information below may start to answer the question.

New Housing: Our Priorities

The Government call for 3 million new homes provides a huge challenge to the church which again requires a massive missional response. Building on the work illustrated in the website Church in New Housing Areas, GfE will give particular attention to the aspect of church planting and fresh expressions with people who move in to new housing areas and have no contact with any church.

As the Churches Coordinating Group for Evangelisation we recognise and appreciate all the work which colleagues do. They foster concerns to do with politics and the planning process, Government and legislation, social and housing justice, and the environment in new housing areas. We also recognise that many church groups and individuals will work hard to protest and protect current communities and countryside. Whilst recognising that these are important issues, they are not, however, the chief priority of this GfE website. Our key concern is how to engage with housing development, serve the new communities, and share the good news of Jesus Christ so that they may become disciples.

GfE works closely with the Churches Coordinating Group for New Housing Areas of Churches Together in England. Indeed three of our members are in both groups. As the Churches Coordinating Group for New Housing Areas hosts the website 'Church in New Housing Areas' much of what GfE would want to say, and the stories it would want to tell, are to be found on their dedicated website. It covers these three main areas:

  1. Engaging with the planning process
  2. Creating community in new housing areas
  3. Church Planting and Fresh Expressions.

Prayer

As in all aspects of ministry and evangelisation, the first priority when beginning to consider a topic of concern is prayer.

Lord, help us to engage with the challenge of new housing in our land. Help us to sieze the opportunities and serve the people moving in to these new communities. Direct our actions in the complexity of planning and politics. Bless the builders, planners, providers and help us all to work together in creative ways and constructive partnerships. Direct our thinking about how to respond as Christians and Churches Together in mission and evangelisation, and above all, equip us to extend the work of your kingdom, on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus name. Amen. .

For your church

Our assumption is that nearly every church in England will have the challenge of new housing on thier doorstep. From small 'add on' estates to complete new towms, everywhere you live will have the opportunity of mission and evengelisation in new housing areas.

We are working on a leaflet for local church leaders, Church Council, House Groups and congregations to consider.

National Network

Recognised experienced representatives of our England denominations and some of the relevant Christian housing networks pool their knowledge, monitor to developments, and host the website 'Church in New Housing Areas' for the wider church under the auspices of Churches Together in England.
