Virtual World

With the web coming of age and internet churches being started, GfE will look at the developments and try to help the wider church engage and respond. We shall also explore online communities and how they are becoming the norm for many people to communicate with each other. This is a work in progress.

In November 2008 a consultation of those people running web churches took place and here is a report of some of the findings. These web churches have a remit for evangelisation as they are outreach initiativesis, but they say themselves that their primary role is fellowship and the exploration of theological issues of common concern. The Church on The Net, however, has the particular intent to make disciples of Jesus and to help people grow in that discipleship in the fellowship of a real congregation.

Internet Evangelism Day brings together a network of people and groups concerned and praying specifically for evangelism on the internet. Tony Whittaker of SOON Ministries networks this group and hosts a website. The group call for the churches to have an Internet Evangelism day on the last Sunday in April. In 2009 it will be on 26th April. They also provide an online audit tool for churches to consider their website and see how evangelistic it might be, and have just launched a blog.

The following research paper is on their website and provides some background material to the whole topic, which can be seen at: Communicating Christ on the Internet.

Prayer

Lord, in this vurtual worlld where so much happens on the internet, we pray for:

The worldwide fellowship of Christians learning from each other. Effective outreach to those peole who do not know you. Good connections with offline as well as online churches. Christians to minister as chaplains to new virtual communities. Protection from areas which dishonour Gospel values. Prayeful responses to world issues seen on the internet.

Father we ask all these things for the extension of you Kingdom and in the name of Jesus.

Why GfE?

The national evangelism officers who serve the major churches in England naturally need to meet, pray, know each other, and work together where possible. GfE serves that need. It does not have a seperate agenda.

GfE is both a Think Tank and Project Management group.

The aim is to help churches, national, regional and local 'work together to share the good news of Jesus Christ'.

The Churches Coordinating Group for Evangelisation (GfE) is a coordinating group of Churches Together in England

What does GfE coordinate?

All of this work is in response to the Gospel and Great Commission of Jesus, and the work of Churches Together in response to the mandate given by national church leasders in the Swanwick Declaration.
